Scope and Contents

Account of a journey through Am Muile/Isle of Mull in which Carmichael describes being in the company of a geologist from London, and the views down the mountain track to Loch Scridain and Loch Ba, and observing a large cairn 'evidently the result of funerals' and a very yellow frog near the summit. He describes the view to loch Ba as 'glorious in the bright sun after the rain the grass sparkline in the sun and every rill laughed gach caochain sa ghleann ri gaire.'

He gives a brief account of Alexander's own family, the Barons of Taigh Sgurrain: their descent from the Easbaig Bàn or Fair-haired Bishop, and the loss of their lands to Sir Donald...

Fragment of a story about hidden treasure on Am Muile/Isle of Mull. The story relates to the betrayal by MacLeod of Dunvegan and Maclean of Lochbuie of Hector Odhar Maclean at the Battle of Bloody Bay. When Maclean realised he was betrayed he 'car[r]ied the treasure up & threw it in the well where it is buried. closed up now simply a hollow.'

The story mentions that MacLean of Coll, MacLaine of Lochbuie and Saxon were out shooting on a Sunday and that [they all got into a boat] which capsized. On being rescued his man said to him, 'Fad bha [th]u os mo chionn san t saoghal cha bhi [th]u os mo chionn san a shaoghal thall.' Scope and Contents Story probably collected from Roderick MacNeil, aged 88, crofter, Miùghlaigh/Mingulay which tells how MacLean of Duart's daughter was married to MacNeil of Barra that they did not get on together. They travelled to see her father in Am Muile/Isle of Mull but on their return she asked to stop in the Sound of Mull/An Caol Muileach to collect some dulse. When she was ashore MacNeil abandoned her and she was drowned on the rocks. On his return home, MacNeil married the daughter of Fear-Chean...

The blacksmith did not need to use tongs as he could hold the hot iron in his hands. He went to Mull [Muile] where he saw a beautiful woman with a cow.
